Topic

Physical discomfort in the eye's surface or deep within the eye, ranging from a slight irritation to serious pain.

Apply a cool or warm compress to the eye, whichever feels better. Over-the-counter artificial tear eye drops may soothe the eye, but don't use drops that clear redness.

See a healthcare professional right away if:

  • Have bad pain and vision changes, such as new-onset blurriness.
  • See halos around lights.
  • Have nausea, vomiting or headache.
  • Have a fever.
  • Can’t move or shut eye.

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:

  • Have discomfort.
  • Vision changes won't go away or get worse.
  • Recent eye surgery.
